Overcoming LONELINESS: 5 STEPS

This week I would like to write about loneliness.

The Wikipedia definition of it is

Loneliness is a complex and usually unpleasant emotional response to isolation or lack of companionship. Loneliness typically includes anxious feelings about a lack of connectedness or communality with other beings. As such, loneliness can be felt even when surrounded by other people. The causes of loneliness are varied and include social, mental, emotional, and spiritual factors.
Lately,  I've been hearing quite a few people say that they feel lonely. Its not just single people without children; I’m talking about married people with children as well.

How could this be?? Easy, we are not intimately connecting with anyone; including our spouses. I believe social media has had something to do with the increasing feelings of loneliness. It’s easier to hide behind a computer monitor and have complete control over what we share with others, than to actually face someone and open up our hearts.

We are surrounded by people, yet we trust no one, we don’t go out of our way to get to know anyone, nor are we willing to commit to anything that would require an ounce of sacrifice on our part.

Connecting on an intimate level with someone it’s not an easy task. It requires these five steps:

1. Acknowledging that we have been in isolation.

2. A positive attitude.

3. A willingness to connect.

4. Realistic expectations.

5. Being patient with ourselves and others.

This week I will be looking at the social, mental, emotional and spiritual factors of loneliness.

Stay tuned :) Thanks for reading.
